7 Tips for Potlucks When Gluten Free
You can’t control what others bring to the gathering, whether it’s a church potluck or a birthday party.
What you can control is what you bring and setting up a few safety measures, especially if you’re celiac.
Communicate! Chances are the potluck you’re going to is hosted by someone you know and that someone cares about you. Ask if you can cover the dishes in between uses and set up whatever precautions you can. If you don’t know what’s in a recipe, ask the creator before everyone goes up to eat.
When in doubt, don’t eat it. You won’t be able to go through a list of ingredients at a buffet line, so if there’s soy sauce and the person who made it doesn’t know if it was a gluten-free soy sauce – skip it. There are many foods and ingredients that you’d be surprised have gluten.
Dish up first. If you’re the first to get food, the chances of cross-contamination diminish.
Bring your own gluten-free food, even if it’s more than the one dish required. Make sure you bring something that will fill you (a protein and maybe a veggie tray from the store).
Stash a backpack with some extra snacks, just in case (this is what we’ve had to do for our daughter at weddings, family potlucks, and parties and we’ve used it 100% of the time).
Use dedicated serving spoons and ask people not to use it in any other dish.
Use a guard cover to prevent gluten-containing food from falling in. These serving warmers are perfect for that.
