This smoothie recipe has been in my drafts for 10 months! 10 months I’ve been sitting on this healthy smoothie recipe that’s packed with nutrients that will help you tackle your to-do list.
So obviously, I’m very excited to share this with you today.
Chocolate Cherry Smoothie Ingredients
- Milk of choice. You can use almond, cashew, oat, coconut, or dairy milk – whatever you prefer. (If you use ultra-filtered milk you’ll double the protein too.)
- Chocolate protein powder. Use your favorite chocolate protein powder, if it’s not very sweet you can add a little sweetener as well (honey/maple syrup/dates).
- Frozen black cherries. If you have fresh cherries that works too but frozen cherries help ice up the recipe without watering it down with ice cups. It gives it that creamy, milkshake consistency.
- Cocoa Powder. To bring extra chocolatey goodness, I added a little extra cocoa to this healthy chocolate cherry smoothie to boost the chocolate flavor.
- Chia seeds. This little ingredient is a powerhouse! Packed with protein in fiber in an itty bitty package, chia seeds are a great addition to any smoothie recipe.
Variations and Substitutions
There are a few options that you could do to customize this cherry and chocolate smoothie to either boost up the nutrition content or suit to your liking:
- If you would like to add more veggies to your day, add 1/2 cup of frozen cauliflower rice. You don’t taste it but it gives you a little extra nutrition in this recipe. I had the intention of adding it to the recipe, but I ran out. Life happens.
- Make this a vegan chocolate cherry smoothie by adding plant-based protein powder instead of whey, and make sure you use non-dairy milk (coconut milk, almond, soy, etc).
- Want to kick it up a notch? Add 1/2 a teaspoon of almond extract for a chocolate cherry almond smoothie.
- Turn it into a chocolate cherry smoothie bowl by pouring it into a bowl and topping it with cherries, slivered almonds, hemp seeds, and shaved dark chocolate.
Supplies
You don’t need much to make this recipe, but I wanted to share what I personally used.
- A high powered blender, I have a Vitamix that I’ve had for years and it works great.
- A glass or shaker cup. I’m often asked about the glasses I used for these photos. I found them on Amazon.
Use what you have. I’ll be honest, I don’t use the pretty (and breakable) glasses often (really, I bought them for photographs).
I tend to pour my smoothies into a shaker cup and head to the computer to work. I like the shaker cup because that way when I inevitably knock it over with my clumsiness, I save a huge mess.

How to Make a Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie
All the smoothies I make, are protein smoothies and this cherry chocolate smoothie is no different.
Adding a source of protein, whether it’s protein powder or greek yogurt, is a great way to boost your meal to keep you fuller for longer (especially when it has fruit).
