What’s a Muffuletta Salad?
I took what’s in a classic muffuletta sandwich, chopped it up, and tossed it with romaine lettuce.
The result was a muffuletta-inspired salad with an olive salad dressing. Yes, a salad vinaigrette made with olive oil, red wine vinegar, and muffuletta mix.
It’s delicious, it’s salty, and it’s pure comfort baby.
Muffuletta Salad Ingredients
- Romaine lettuce. Or any lettuce you prefer, I wanted light but crisp lettuce.
- Red Peppers. I wanted to add a little extra vegetables. You can also add carrots and whatever favorite vegetables you have on hand.
- Genoa salami. I chose this because the Mediterranean market told me it was the cheaper alternative, so I went with that.
- Mortadella. Mortadella is basically pork sandwich meat. If you cannot find it at your grocery store you can substitute it for bologna or if you want to go for a lower-fat option, sliced turkey.
- Capicoli. This is cured cold cut of meat. It reminded me of prosciutto. I was able to find it at our local Mediterranean market but if you have a tough time you can use a little prosciutto or just for sliced deli ham.
- Provolone cheese. Thankfully this cheese is widely available at all grocery stores, but you can substitute it havarti, gouda, or whatever your preference is if necessary.
- Mozzarella cheese. I bought mine presliced to make life a little easier. Level up your salad by using fresh mozzarella.
- Baguette. Cubed and toasted to make croutons.
- Green Olives. Or whatever olives you want to add to your salad.
Red onion would also be a delicious addition to this salad recipe.
Olive Salad Vinegarette
I whipped together a simple salad dressing that really took this salad over the top.
- Muffuletta Mix. You can find this at the store (I had luck finding the muffuletta olive salad at a Mediterranean market, they had a few different options) or on Amazon. Italian style or New Orleans style will be fine.
- Red wine vinegar.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
I put everything in a blender and created a smooth dressing. I put everything in a blender and created a smooth dressing. The leftovers I will put it in a mason jar and store it in the fridge for 4-5 days.
Sandwich Meat and Sodium
Let’s be clear, this is a high sodium salad. The delicious deli and cured meats are a little extra.
I wouldn’t recommend having this every single day but it was a delicious treat (if you can call salads a treat) and a change of pace.
