Fresh blueberries are coming into season soon, and if you went a little crazy at the market and want to know what to do with blueberries, I have over 70 of the healthiest blueberry dessert recipes.
Health Benefits of Blueberries
Blueberries are a nutrient-dense fruit that contains antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins.
The blue and purple hues are because of anthocyanins, an antioxidant (source). Antioxidants help fight free radicals that damage cells, which can lead to diseases such as cancer.
Anthocyanins are helpful for your immune system, inflammation, heart disease, and more. They’re found in blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrants, cranberries, cherries, black raspberries, and other deep hue fruits.
Unless you’re allergic, there are no downsides to enjoying blueberries.
Healthy Blueberry Dessert Tips
Are these recipes gluten free?
There are plenty of gluten free blueberry dessert options here in the post (including the ones here from Randa Nutrition. If you want to know how to make one of these recipes gluten free, most all purpose flour based recipes can be substituted with a 1:1 gluten free flour blend (my favorite is this Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Baking Flour– the blue bag). You can also use almond flour or coconut flour (but you will have to alter the recipe to make it work).
Can I use frozen blueberries?
Frozen blueberries are a great option as they’re lower cost and are flash frozen at the height of their nutritional density. Each recipe is unique, so I would double check with the author but usually, you can substitute fresh berries for frozen, just let them thaw first so the berries don’t release too much water.
Are these recipes vegan?
I did include vegan blueberry dessert recipes in the round up, but not everyone is vegan. Each recipe differs but you could probably swap some of the dairy for plant based ingredients (like butter for coconut oil, cream for coconut cream, honey for maple syrup, etc). Always check the original recipe notes first.
What does a healthy recipe include?
The term healthy is subjective, which is why I wanted a variety of healthier desserts. To some it means a sugar free recipe, others it means using natural sugars. When I compiled the list, I looked at it as a whole and judged it based on the ingredients, macros, and serving size. Some recipes have white sugar (but less than a cup), some have a high carbohydrate count (but it is also high in protein or fiber), others only have whole ingredients. I included GF options (like oat flour and almond meal) but there are also recipes with whole wheat flour. I made sure to have a variety of recipes that can suit most lifestyles.
Healthy Toppings for Blueberry Desserts
Whether it’s a pie, a blueberry crumble, or pancakes toppings can make or break the dish.
If you’re looking to reduce your sugar intake, a scoop of vanilla ice cream alongside your blueberry cobbler can add up your calorie intake and make you feel that you overdid it.
Here’s what I like to serve with healthy blueberry desserts:
Plain 0% Greek yogurt. This boosts the protein intake, keeps you full, and helps stablilze your blood sugar levels (meaning you won’t crash in a few hours…or crave more sugar right after). You can also use vanilla greek yogurt.
Whipped Cream. Everything is better than whipped cream. You can health it up by either adding less sugar, no sugar, or substituting sugar with monk fruit/ertythol blend like Swerve (they also have a substitution for brown sugar that’s incredible).
Coco Whip. If you’re dairy free or can’t have lactose I love the So Delicious Coco Whip. You can find it in the freezer section at your local grocery store. The taste is dead on to regular whipped cream. I always have a container in the freezer. I put it on overnight oats, waffles, coffee, I put it on everything.
Almonds. Depending on the dessert, topping your treats with almonds (or any nut like walnuts, pecans, or pistachos) gives it a boost of protein and fats.
