There’s nothing better than scoring a great deal on berries during blueberry season. If you’re looking for ideas on what to do with this popular fresh fruit, you need to try this healthy blueberry crisp recipe.
Ingredients:
You can use the base of these simple ingredients for most fruit crisps (fresh berries, apple, rhubarb, etc).
For the blueberry filling
- fresh blueberries
- maple syrup or honey
- lemon juice
- vanilla extract
- arrowroot starch (if you don’t have any, cornstarch works as a thickener as well)
I recommend mixing this together in a large mixing bowl.
For the crisp topping
- coconut oil (butter also works, or a vegan butter if that’s what you have on hand)
- almond flour
- coconut sugar or dark brown sugar (brown sugar Swerve is another great option)
- old fashioned oats (also known as rolled oats)
- cinnamon
- salt
I recommend using a medium mixing bowl.
A note about the old-fashioned oats: if you are celiac disease please ensure the oats are from a gluten free facility. This ensures there has been no cross contamination.
Can I use Frozen Blueberries for Crisp?
You can totally use frozen blueberries, but you may need to sprinkle a little more arrowroot starch as the filling will be more watery.
Another option would be to let them thaw (or you could even cheat and zap them in the microwave for a few seconds).
What Can I Use Instead of Almond Flour?
I recently had a reader mention that she has a severe nut allergy and cannot make my recipes that have almond flour. So I wanted to adjust this with a substitution.
Instead of almond flour, you could use a gluten free all purpose flour. Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 (the blue bag) is a great one to buy.
If you don’t have that on hand, try oat flour (which is simply some rolled oats broken down into flour in a blender).
What’s the Difference Between a Crisp and a Crumble Topping?
The difference between a blueberry crumble vs a blueberry crisp is that crisps have oats and sometimes may have nuts. Crumbles don’t.
Is Blueberry Crisp Healthy?
Every recipe is going to be different but this one uses healthy ingredients.
It’s easy to make adjustments to make it work for your lifestyle as well.
Supplies
The baking dish I used is the Portmeirion Sophie Conran White Rectangular Lasagne / Roaster.I have a few Sophie Conran pieces and I love this baker. I bought it a few months ago and it makes every dish look like a million bucks.
You can also get a 9×13 Portmeriron Sophie Contrant Handled Casserole Dish that’s gorgeous.
The dimensions are roughly 9×11, but any smallish casserole dish will work.

Not only is this a delicious dessert but it’s also a healthy blueberry crisp recipe that’s perfect for breakfast. (in my professional opinion).

I love blueberry crisp! We have a lot of berries frozen. Maybe not as good as fresh, but still yummy!
